“Gathering In” is the delicious theme of The Cultivating Project’s issue this Fall. My essay contribution to it, “Healing between the Fragments”, postures me in an odd reversal. It is my first piece written as one scattered versus gathered, yet again—this time from the USA to Germany, my home for the next
three years! (More on that next post! 🇺🇸🇯🇲🇩🇪)
Two other great reasons to pop over to this great free online publication: First, my dear husband Claude was asked by founder, Director of Cultivating, Lancia E. Smith, to contribute a piece this issue, sharing his perspectives on ‘Proximity’, as it relates to our current racial and cultural climate; and second, there is indeed included a delicious pumpkin bread recipe with accompanying story, Miss Lucy’s Pumpkin Bread Recipe, by fellow writer, Annie Nardone! This entire issue is well worth ‘gathering in’ to a comfy chair with a cup of tea, coffee or chocolate and settling down for soul-comfort on a cool Fall or breezy Caribbean evening.
So, today I received my copy of the Premiere edition of The Joyful Life Magazine! It is beautiful! Over the course of this year, I have had the privilege of watching this project come together. In the process, founder/ editor Sandi Sutton and her team have created a virtual community on Facebook and started a blog to which I am also privileged to be a contributing writer/ affiliate. They threw out the welcome carpet to the female Christian writers and creatives community and, by lots of sweat and hard work, produced a gorgeous coffee table, quarterly holiday edition, titled ‘Abide’.
It is laden with substantial articles, grappling honestly with real down to earth circumstances, yet has a trendy feel and other scrumptious content to which women in any season of life would be drawn. But meaningful content was not attained at the cost of aesthetic flair; this magazine is positively beautiful. It is a restful experience to simply leaf through its satiny pages.
But don’t take my word for it. Click here to learn about The Joyful Life Magazine and to subscribe for your copy of the ‘Abide’ edition. Happy Thanksgiving and have a wonderful Advent season!
Part 2, A Conversation About Mary and The Women at The Table
I know it is right during Lent to consider Jesus as we prepare to commemorate His atonement and resurrection. But did you ever wonder what his mother, Mary, must have gone through – wondering what was going to happen to her perfect Son? What must the ponderings of her heart have been, as it approached the piercing prophesied by Simeon.
Thank God that in the sobriety and even the sorrow of Lent we realize that we have a God who knows us in every human experience, even our pain. Through Mary we observe how to bear patiently through our pain with faith and courage.
As Lent culminates we explore these themes through conversation, Scripture and poetry. Pull up a chair and join me in a lively conversation around Mary’s table with Aliyah Lauren Jacobs, author of the novel Yehudit and host of the South African podcast ‘Heart Beat’.
