Encounter On the Sea of Glass and a Tour of the Ages

“For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the One who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.”(Rom. 8:19-21 NIV)

Re-birth: As Only Stars Might Know

Twinkle, had been escorted by her mother, Shining Star, into God’s Throne Room, as stars might experience it! When they had traversed the crystal Shining Sea*, Twinkle’s selfish, ulterior motives were exposed, repented of and cleansed in the approach.

Overcome by love, as she now faced the Source of all purity, holiness and Light, she was swept up into a holy waltz, passed among the the Divine Personages of the Trinity. The thrill was more than a young star could stand as she interacted in fellowship with the Triune God:

In the embrace of the Father she was straightened, strengthened and envisioned. She felt her stellar heart expand to accommodate seasons of growth in purpose and brilliance yet to come on her celestial horizon.

Without sensing a transition, she realized that she was soon in the hands of the Second person of the God-head. She was flooded with a sense of peace and safety in His grip; a knowing that this mighty Commander of the Heavenly Hosts would settle, once and for all, any and everything that could ever threaten the Divine order.

As her enquiring heart found rest in this new awareness of peace and security, Twinkle was again overcome by a sensation of being flooded from the inside, yet also baptized from without. Engulfed in a fiery intensity that ordered all her youthful zeal, she knew at last, with joy, that her orbit was well-choreographed by the Father of Lights and executed by the Divine Paraclete.

Visions filled her stellar core as she was supplied glimpses of future orbits in which she would serve God’s divine purpose. Deep within her an eternal fire was kindled, far beyond her characteristic flare-ups. An eternal furnace had been set ablaze.

Without a word of explanation, Twinkle knew this light in her would never go out for it was fueled by God Himself. She flamed whiter and hotter till she thought she would explode, and in a sense, she did, internally; for when she was gently set down again on the Sea of Glass, bright sparks flashed from her in a pattern of beauty that was uniquely her, yet also the Father’s. As she caught sight of her mother worshipping in like resplendent beauty, reflecting the emerald green from the arc above the Throne, Twinkle became aware of an intense desire to share this new light and warmth with her brother Sparkle and her fellow stars at Celestial Halls. In fact, she wanted to share this new found love, joy and peace with everyone and everything in all Creation!

A View Down the Road to Mystery

Then the voice of God spoke again, “If you ever realize a need for more wisdom, come again, precious one; I give liberally, such as you’ve received, without reproach. If My first image bearers had grasped this truth, they would never have listened to that evil one in the Garden. A pause, to wonder—about My nature, My words and My deeds towards them—would have averted the fear and doubt that led them to follow the one who was most unworthy of their trust.”

Twinkle sighed with the satisfaction of understanding and joyful acceptance of mystery, as both flooded the newly expanded core of her being.

“Now,” continued God with divine laughter and unrestrained zeal, “About My plan to redeem My image bearers, on your favorite planet and Mine!”

Twinkle’s question about Earth’s redemption had almost been forgotten in the Light of God’s Eternal glory and grace. But, as if aided by the welcome of the Divine One, her fathers’ words drifted back to her, “…the Lord will present Himself into earth’s time and space…” “How?” She managed an awed whisper.

There was the briefest of pauses, but came the answer, “This… is mystery, Twinkle, only some of which can be revealed; such has been written about by My prophets from ages past, according to My holy will. Your Maester Starr will pull back the veil for you in orbits fast approaching, as you complete your lessons in the Celestial Halls. But because you have asked I will pull back the veil and give you glimpses of my plan.

What Twinkle and Shining Star Saw

Twinkle and her mother were lifted up to yet another heavenly vantage point from which eternal eras opened up like a vast curtain pulled back, and the blue planet zoomed closer into full view. A series of scenes appeared in sequence like the rhythm and pattern of the celestial elements in their orbit:

Abraham Leaves the Worship of Stars

First, was the scene of a fertile land between two rivers where people were wildly engaged in worship and consultation of the heavenly bodies rather than the Creator, God Eternal. Twinkle and Shining shrank back in horror, they were aware that the fall of humanity had resulted in such practices, having discussed that in their earliest lessons in the celestial halls; but to the stars which burned to declare the Glory of God alone, and show forth His handiwork, the idea of receiving worship could not be more repulsive. They breathed a sigh of relief, as only stars can breathe, when the scene further unfolded revealing a man and his family— a wife, a nephew and servants, flocks etc. — fleeing the idolatrous region, called Ur, in obedience to God.

The next scene revealed the night-sky, as viewed from Earth, with all the starry hosts, brilliant above in their shining. Neatly laid out beneath them were the tent dwellings of the man who had fled. He was now a wealthy nomad, both he and his wife, manifestly full of years, but still childless. His heart-rending prayer to God, as they listened, complained that all his many blessings would have to be left to his faithful steward, since God had given him no son.

Then God brought him outside and said, “Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them. So shall your descendants be.” And he believed in the Lord and He counted it to him for righteousness.** Twinkle exchanged a knowing smile with her mother, as they recognized their own constellation and orbit, in the array which God had shown to Abram; for that was this faithful nomad’s name, before God changed it to Abraham— father of nations.

Even more important to Twinkle was what God later told Abraham, when, in complete faith and trust toward God, Abraham had obediently prepared to surrender the one son God had indeed eventually given to him. Abraham would have sacrificed him in obedience, had not God, through an angel, stopped him by providing a ram in the nearby bushes. For this bold demonstration of faith, God had declared,

I swear by Myself, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.”*** The young star’s bright mind shone even brighter at this last promise, of the salvation of the nations of the earth. She began to recognize the beginnings of the answer to her greatest question.

Joseph and His Dream of Stars

As the two stars continued to watch from the rare seat of privilege being afforded them by God, they realized next, that they were viewing the dream of a young teenager who was snuggled asleep with his little brother, the only other direct sibling by his mother. Next to him lay a beautiful, multi-colored robe.

This time it was the heavenly bodies which did obeisance to this boy in his dream—eleven stars, the sun and the moon! The dream angered the boy’s family; the stars saw why; he had eleven brothers, each represented by a star, and the sun and moon were evidently his father, Jacob, and the remaining wife, Leah, since the mother of the two, Rachel, had died. Things changed rapidly for Jacob’s favored son, as his jealous brothers cruelly sold Him into slavery. But God, the Holy Spirit, wasted no time in making clear to Twinkle and Shining that the difficult life this young man was about to go through was all part of God’s saving plan for the fallen planet. For Jacob, later named Israel, and his twelve sons, plus one daughter, were the direct descendants of the faithful Abraham through whom God promised all nations of earth would be blessed.

Moses: God’s Hand-Picked Deliverer

But this people was to go through many more years of trials before this Promise dawned. This included four hundred years of slavery in the same land of Egypt. Nonetheless, as the Heavenly Father’s plan continued to unfold, He raised up a deliverer—Moses, who with many mighty acts of God led them forth out of Egyptian bondage. Twinkle and Shining again nodded in recollection of the most remarkable of these acts of deliverance—the parting of the body of water on earth, then called the Red Sea. This had allowed Abraham’s descendants, through his great grandson, Jacob, renamed Israel, to cross over on dry ground; but the king of Egypt and his army all perished, when the waters closed over them as they attempted to follow God’s chosen ones through the sea. Moses led them to the foot of a mountain called Sinai, where God made a binding promise to be their God if they obeyed the commands He Himself gave to Moses, promising to fulfill His promise to Abraham to bring God’s deliverance to the world through them.

Balaam: A Pagan Sees a Glimpse of God’s Plan

The scene which followed next, was a disturbing one—a drama unfolding, of two men, apparently in an argument. As the Holy Spirit touched their understanding, it was revealed to the two stars that one of the men was a pagan king, and the other a pagan sorcerer, whom God sometimes employed as one uses a tool and puts it down again. This was an unusual arrangement, facilitating the dearth of godly see-ers, for the Almighty is a God of relationships who prefers to send His messages through His friends. This in fact was how God had been communicating with His image bearers, since the Garden, when their disobedience filled them with a fear of speaking directly with Him. God by His Holy Spirit used dreams, visions, angelic visitations and special appearances of contained aspects of His presence, called theophanies, to interact with humankind, His highest creation. But Twinkle knew this was not what her father spoke of just before shooting off on his mission to the earth.

A Star Out of Jacob

The two men in the scene were looking over a wide valley in a region of earth called Moab. This plain had an encampment of about three million people, the very descendants of the same father Abraham, en route from their exodus out of Egyptian bondage. Their tents were orderly arranged, by their twelve tribes, in the valley, in a cross-like shape.

“I hired you to curse them!” yelled the now red-faced king. “But instead you have blessed them, bountifully, these three times!!!”

“What else can I do but speak what God is putting into my mouth?” replied the frustrated see-er.

As the angry king was ordering the prophet out of his sight, on pain of death, the see-er, once again entranced, spoke up in many words whose meanings were veiled to Twinkle and her mother, Shining Starr. But among them were these, as the see-er fell to the ground with his eyes staring transfixed. The king made his soldiers back away as Balaam spoke, for that was his name:

“I see Him, but not now;

I behold Him, but not near;

A Star shall come out of Jacob;

A Scepter shall rise out of Israel,

And batter the brow of Moab…

While Israel does valiantly.

Out of Jacob One shall have dominion,

…” ****

Following these and other mysterious words of prophecy, Balaam arose  and departed on his donkey, followed by the disgruntled king Balak of Moab and his soldiers. It had become clear to them that Israel would become established in the land, for it was God’s sovereign plan that a holy King would arise from among them—A Star, a heavenly One. Twinkle and Shining instinctively knew, this One to come would be no mere physical star, but a Light for all creation, like none other!

A Faithful Judge and Warring Stars

Sadly, this people was a bitter, complaining and rebellious people, who refused to rest under the miraculous benevolent rule of their delivering God, and they all soon perished in the wilderness. But as God continued to unveil earth’s history, the two stars saw that the offspring of the Israelites survived and entered the beautiful land God had promised to Abraham. However, they were just as rebellious as their parents and God had to raise up leader after leader to bring them back after each rebellious foray would deprive them of His presence. .

God pulled back the curtain on one such period revealing the leader, a woman named Deborah. At God’s direction she wrestled to awaken Israel’s fearful and abdicating male population, urging them to resist their oppressors, Edom, led by the evil general, Sisera. After the successful battle, marshaled by Deborah, she composed and sang a poem, which stirred such blood as God-glorifying stars may have coursing through their being. It rang thus, as the Father of Lights delighted to unveil it for the two:

“Lord, when You went out to Seir,

When you marched from the region of Edom,

The earth trembled

And the heavens dropped,

Yes, the clouds dropped water.

The mountains quaked before the Lord,

Even Sinai before the Lord , the God of Israel….

From heaven the stars fought,

From their courses they fought against Sisera…”—(Judg. 5:2-5; 20.)

Just as the scene began to cycle away from Deborah’s story, God drew out the question that was forming in Twinkle’s mind, and her mother smiled, for she also knew her daughter well.

“Yes”, God said to Twinkle, “The Stars fought right there, from their courses. They did not have to leave their orbits. They fought from the heavens as I commanded and directed them, and so can you…if that is my will for you.”

Twinkle, smiled a sparkly grin as she recalled one of the sayings which Maester Star had them memorize,  “Look up into the heavens. Who created all the stars? He brings them out like an army, one after another, calling each by its name. Because of his great power and incomparable strength, not a single one is missing.” (Isaiah 40:26 NLT)

“Your father, Bright, is on a particularly unique assignment, for I am about to do a thing never before heard of.”

The presence of God became somber at this point and a deep sadness settled on the space, but only for a moment as God re-opened the curtains on the annals of Earth’s story. “My chosen people eventually rejected these leaders and prophets and told my last judge, Samuel, to give them a king like all the heathen idolatrous nations which I was driving out before them. They rejected Me.”

Two Kings, The Stars and the Zeal of the Lord of Hosts

Public Domain, Wikipedia; (Saul and David by Rembrandt Mauritshuis; created between 1650 and 1670)

The scenes shown revealed Israel’s first king, Saul, and the failure of his rule. As it played out, the stars saw how God led the aged judge, Samuel, to anoint the youngest son of an Israelite named Jesse. The boy was a bold shepherd and a Psalmist—one who wrote and sang poetic songs of worship to God. But this anointed soldier and leader was not allowed to assume the throne of Israel until after many years of persecution by the maddened Saul. As God unfurled the view of the young boy, strumming his makeshift harp in the green pastures surrounded by flocks of sheep, God’s joy overflowed and filled the Throne Room and the Heavenly Scene.

Simultaneously, Shining Star breathed the name, “David…” and continued quoting a passage she recalled from her years in the Celestial Halls, “I will make the descendants of David my servant and the Levites who minister before Me as countless as the stars in the sky and as measureless as the sand on the seashore.” (Jer. 33:22)

The Voice of God erupted like the sound of many waters as He prepared to unveil the next round of scenes to the stars, “This, my Shining ones, is where the Story truly begins to radiate with the wonder of My plan!
